The memorial was established as a national park in 1916, and designated as a National Historical site in 1959. The building is symbolic, featuring 16 windows, 16 rosettes on the ceiling, and 16 fence poles, representing Lincoln being the 16th president. 56 steps, one for every year representing his age at the time of his death, lead up to the memorial.Beginning February 12, 2008, the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site will host the starting event for the nation's celebration of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's life. The Lincoln Bicentennial will run from February 12, 2008 through February 12, 2010.
