Stock Photo Description: This stock photo Hampton Plantation, sometimes called Horry Plantation, was a large rice plantation on the Wambaw Creek (South Santee River) in the pre Civil War South. The original portion of the Georgian-style plantation house was built in the 1740s and the wings added in the 1760s. President George Washington visited the house on his 1791 Southern Tour, when the plantation owner asked whether the giant oak tree in front of the house, shown towering over the house in this stock photo, should be cut down to improve the view. Washington replied that he liked the tree and it was saved, a legend commemorated on a plaque beneath the tree, known as the Washington Oak. The plantation is now open to the public and is located in St James Santee Parish, Charleston County, South Carolina.
